Pastor Rachel
Hebrews 2:14-15 14 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
Introduction
- Being human alone means you are subject to bondage
- You come into this world and you will be part of the system of the world
- Because time is short on earth and ticking, people are ready to all sorts of things
- For Christians however, life is eternal.
Description of bondage as Yoke
- A Yoke can help to visualize the concept of bondage
- A Yoke is a wooden crosspiece that is attached to the necks of two animals
- If one animal is faster than the other, the slower one is constantly out of breath or is breaking its neck
- More general it means that others are determining the speed or direction people need to go in the world
How does bondage operate?
- bondage can happen in the physical, spiritually and mentally
- it means to be hindered
- it means to be levied (literally means to pay taxes for someone)
- it means to get restricted of you own progress
- it means to get restricted to make your own choices and decisions
- however: your own choices should not impact others
- you should not e.g. think the speed limit is a restriction and a sign of bondage as by risking the life of others you bring bondage to other people
- it means to be restricted or intimidated spiritual and physical
What are the instruments of bondage?
- Physical strength (men, but e.g. as well other countries)
- intellectual advantage (e.g. people knowing more keeping that knowledge secret from you)
- practices, tradition, culture (e.g. man do not cry, woman do not shout)
- covenants and contracts
Our Prayer for you:
- God will give you true freedom
- You will life your life without competition as you know you have eternal life
